Kablammo!

So I was going to practice Finnish by reading this book:

But then it opened like this:

Jukolan talo, eteläisessä Hämeessä, seisoo erään mäen pohjaisella rinteellä, liki Toukolan kylää. Sen läheisin ympäristö on kivinen tanner, mutta alempana alkaa pellot, joissa, ennenkuin talo oli häviöön mennyt, aaltoili teräinen vilja.

So I moved on and tried this book next, since it was abridged for children and featured a Finnish-English glossary in the back:

And, hell, I didn’t have too much trouble with stuff like this:

Olen syntynyt vuonna tuhatkuusisataakolmekymmentäkaksi (1632) Yorkin kaupungissa. Nimeni on Robinson Crusoe. Sukunimeni johtuu saksalaisesta nimestä Kreutznaer, sillä isäni oli kotoisin Bremenistä.

But I’m lazy. So then I tried reading this book:

But then I ended up back in vocabulary-deficit-land, with gems like these:

— “Muuan Herra Karmio pyrkii puheillenne.”
— “Pyytäkää hänet sisään.”

(Also, I hate the accusative case.) So after some more digging among my mother’s old books, I found this:

Hooray, this is shit I can deal with:

Oli kerran hiiri pienoinen
— tämän kannon päässä näet sen.
Se hyppelee, se karkeloi,
se huutelee: hohoi, hohoi.

And now I’m golden.

  I found the abridged Robinson Crusoe pretty amusing. Also the fact that from the first look the kid looks like he’s holding a rifle in ‘Eläinten valtias’.
